Review of Carrie (2013) by Joe O — 23 Mar 2014
Many many years ago I saw the original and I liked it but I was very disapointed by the ending that, in no way, reflected the apocalyptic feeling of the books final. Due to FX limitations an costs, I learned years after seeing it by reading an Interview with Brian D Palma (the director). But it offered lots of character depth and development.
The remake (and it is one, and not a re-imagining) does it the other way around. The built up is shorter, but the finale comes very close to Stephen Kings fantasy. It is great. That the movie does not fail has to do with the fantastic acting of Juliette Moore as the fanatic mother (she gave me the creeps) and Chloe, who brings a present day Carrie to a fantastic and emotional life. Only thing is: as she is gorgeous you really don't think she would be such an outsider, but she makes that up with her acting.
So yes: this "Carrie" is a great drama and horror flick that just could have needed a little bit of a character depth in some areas.
I liked it and I felt with the protagonists. And once again I felt so sorry for Carrie and her troubled life.
