Review of Carnival of Souls (1962) by Luke R — 07 Mar 2010
This creepy little movie comes from an age where horror was much different than it is today...and what a sight it was. I had a lot of trouble hearing this movie until I got off my ass and plugged in my good speakers, but it was still worth it.
Telling the story of a young woman recently come out of a traumatic car accident trying to fit back into society, the film is subtly surreal and creepily "out there" for its duration. Some of the acting kind of sucks, but I can't really hold that against the film, as it was already pretty low budget as it is, and they are at least trying.
Really where this movie shines is the build up. Carnival of Souls doesn't seem like much at first, but as it progresses, it becomes unsettling and odd, increasing in magnitude with every scare. The film builds up to a boiling, blackened cauldron of frothing classic horror, and at the end, the doom comes full circle.
Haunting.
