Review of Carlito's Way (1993) by Paul J — 15 Mar 2009
This may be De Palma's best film. Sure it's heavy-handed but he's clearly taking an operatic approach. The worst you can say about it is that it has a few cliche's. That's mainly due to the fact that in the past 15 years, the film has been imitated again and again.
Not that De Palma was doing anything terribly new. Still, the performances are first-rate and the extended steadi-cam shots are remarkable. No matter how many times I see it, I always hope for a happier ending.
But isn't that the point?
