Review of Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001) by Wrik S — 31 Mar 2013
Beauty can't save a film. I don't know what happened here. From a director that brought us 'Shakespeare in Love' and plenty of other great films adapted from a good book, everything was set up to be a classic. What we get, however, is a film where history is forgotten and only superficially touched upon because of the films story. Nothing seemed to happen, people got drunk and played music, however I, to my surprise, was kept interested in the film and did enjoy it, somewhat, even though it didn't reach the level of emotion that I would have liked it to. I know a few fight scenes happened but I struggled to recall what happened in them because they were sporadic and un-involving, much like the film.
For what it is, it's fine. For what it COULD have been... Well, it's sad to think.
