Review of Captain Blood (1935) by Ola G — 14 Jan 2010
In seventeenth century England, Irish Dr. Peter Blood (Errol Flynn) is convicted of treason against the King for aiding a wounded friend who had participated in the Monmouth Rebellion in accordance of his professional duties. He is sentenced to slavery in the British colony of Port Royal, and is purchased by the beautiful niece of the local military commander Colonel Bishop, Arabella Bishop (Olivia de Havilland), who is attracted by his rebellious nature. During a Spanish raid on the town, Doctor Blood and his fellow slaves escape, steal the Spanish ship and begin a life of piracy.
This was Errol Flynns first major role and that is partly obvious. His high points came later with for example "The Adventures of Robin Hood". Nevertheless, this is a black & white classic and fun to watch. You cannot go wrong with having Flynn, de Havilland and Rathbone in the leads. There is a screen chemistry between Flynn and de Havilland and its hardly no wonder that they made 8 pictures together. Not bad, but hardly Flynns best.
