Review of Captain Blood (1935) by James B — 09 Oct 2010
This is a movie I've wanted to see for a long time based upon the Korngold soundtrack. I finally bought a warner brothers DVD of it. Great movie. The main theme used by Korngold seems like it is kind of like "Finlandia" by Sibelius, which fits the films narrative of oppression / freedom. There are neat bugle calls during the big battle scene at the end, which are kind of Wagnerian sounding, but clearly wouldn't be playable on real bugles.
The DVD I bought is really nice as they try to make it seem like a day at the movies in 1935. They added a news reel, a cartoon, an Edgard Bergen / Charlie McCarthy short, and a musical segment with Johnny Green and his Orchestra. Very enjoyable all the way around.
