Review of Captain Blood (1935) by Johnnylee T — 03 Jul 2016
Flynn is absolutely charismatic in the title role. Never realised how dominating his physical presence is as well as his captivating personality! He just relishes the role. What a great James Bond he would have made 25 years or so later. Olivia de Havilland celebrated her 100th birthday recently and even though she came to fight the studio for being trapped in limiting roles like she plays here, she is wonderful with Flynn (she must have been a teenager when it was made).
Director Curtiz puts it all together excitingly, hardly slowing the pace. His lighting of night scenes is particularly memorable.
