Review of Captain Blood (1935) by Kevin R — 31 Dec 2011
The first great swashbuckler from Errol Flynn. This film has the distinction of catapulting not only Olivia de Havilland but especially Errol Flynn into legitimate stardom. It's interesting to watch both of their very earliest film performances.
Olivia is clearly the more disciplined and classically trained actor from a theatre background. Errol, on the other hand is a real gem...A diamond in the rough operating on sheer charisma and a basic naturally instinct.
Both are very good, but Flynn literally carried the whole film and sear the screen in everyone of his scenes. Much like his other swashbuckling films of this era under the banner of Warner Bros., he's surrounded by a fantastic cast under the capable direction of Michael Curtiz and a first of many great film scores from Erich Wolfgang Korngold.
...WHAT AN INCREDIBLE DEBUT!!!!!....Rating: 8.5/10.
