Review of Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) by Paul J — 05 Apr 2014
Another thoroughly enjoyable Marvel movie. One after another, they keep getting them right. What worked best for me in this action-packed movie was the fact that Captain America was initially exploited and made fun of.
He became a mockery. What a stroke of genius! Also, I genuinely liked the characters. Like his polar opposite in Iron Man, Evans was perfectly cast. The ending is heartbreaking and resonates. It left me wanting to see our hero again.
It's remarkable how Marvel fit everything together. Everything in this script is organic to the story - it never feels forced. In the end, it may not be as perfect as Iron Man (although pretty damn close), it does however, have more heart.
The emotional impact combined with the self-referential genius of the film, makes this one of the greatest comic book films ever made.
