Review of Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) by Ryan M — 21 Aug 2014
I always thought Captain America would be one of the dumbest looking superheroes on film. After seeing the way they discarded the blue/yellow costumes of the X-Men for the more realistic look in the films, I thought his strictly red-white-and-blue costume couldn't possibly be done well. But it is. Though they seemed to concentrate so much on Cap's costume, they forgot about Red Skull - he looks shit! Maybe I need to rewatch it but it just looked like Hugo Weaving in a red latex mask and nothing more. Considering the way they made Chris Evans look so skinny and frail in the first part of the movie, I thought it was a massive disappointment that they seemed to put no effort into making the Skull look intimidating.
I also always thought the whole Captain America thing wouldn't work well in a movie, but the director obviously took great care of it, and it turns out to be a very pleasant surprise. Good movie all round, despite my complaints.
Oh, and Evans plays him very well. I thought he did so well as the cocky Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four, he'd never pull it off. He does.
