Review of Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) by Colin C — 04 Aug 2015
The story sometimes stumbles over itself because it's the direct predecessor to 'The Avengers'. Marvel saddled it with this burden to a lesser extent than 'Iron Man 2', and the strain shows from time to time.
The film is still a fun ride thanks to director Joe Johnston, who excels in pulp action-adventure (if you still haven't seen 'The Rocketeer', WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU!).
Marvel was acquired by the Walt Disney Company whilst Captain America was in pre-production, and just like 'Iron Man 2' captured the spirit of Uncle Walt's 1959 World's Fair, this movie taps into the treasure trove of artwork that the Disney Studio unleashed during World War II.
