Review of Captain America (1990) by Magnus G — 31 Jul 2012
Here we have the first attempt, I believe, of putting Captain America in a film. Well, there you have it. That was the movie. Where do I start... This movie failed, and is a low-budget mess- but also is just bad on script and everything else, it is not just down to the budget, which isn't the movie's fault as much as it had a bigger budget, but a few days into shooting, the company who were producing the film reduced it majorly. Can I please just ask? How is this Captain America when he is a normal man in a latex suit who can run slightly fast and that is really it, and can throw a frisbee!
The cast is probably the best part of this movie as there is maybe one or two characters who are a bit likeable in this movie, but Steve Rogers in this movie is actually quite dislikeable as he goes around ditching people to fend for themselves, and he is just a bit pathetic- and never. Ever. Feels like a super-hero. The love interest in this movie is reasonably likeable, but that is it, the rest of the cast is pretty cheesy, and with one of the worst villains I have seen in years. The worst way they could've done Red Skull, after he recieves plastic surgery, so he is just a man for the rest of the movie- that's low.
Directing is an art form where you orchestrate a piece that will merge together to make film- an art like no other. Here we have the rear end of that, with some of the worst action scenes ever. There are scenes where people are shooting, and they will gunshots added to the gun for effect, and every so often that wil be messed out, and also there are scenes that are filmed in darkness, and you can only hear bad movie punches. Then the script added to this with just plain bad lines that are just full of cheese, and it just got ridiculous. The stunts are normally pathetic with the amazing Captain America who can throw tables, and punch through walls- that is the most you will get!
That is the technical side, but the movie itself is stuffed to the brim with plot holes and flaws that will drive you crazy, here is one to give you an idea without spoiling anything: There is a scene where Captain America is driving with a man he doesn't trust, and this man ais a good character in the film, so Captain America pretends to be sick, the guy comes to comfort, then the Captain runs off and steals the car- leaving the good guy in the middle of Canada, when they live in Washington DC- a few shots later, maybe a day later, there is the good guy talking to a man at his work like nothing has happened. Did he walk the whole way, he was in a forest.
Another problem is that he becomes Captain America insanely quickly that you miss all character devlopment, and also there is no relationship betwen Red Skull and the Captain, and then they start randomly fighting like they are arch nemesis', it is crazy stuff. Also the finale of this movie is so stupid. And that is what this movie is- the answer to this movie is if yoou don't have the budget, don't make the movie. And may I just say that this movie has some of the worst subtitling I have ever seen. Really. Also, there is one defeat by Captain America where, when he turns around, he looks at the camera for a second. Really? This film never felt like a Captain America movie. It was like watching a really bad Bond movie, with latex.
But after all this you would think this should get a one out of 5 or something like that. No. This is a 2 out of 5, because I enjoyed myself whilst watching it because it was quite funny, and the direction and stiff acting is so poor that it will leave you chuckling out of embarassment of the scnene. This is why I weirdly reccommend this movie because this is a great movie night party, as it is fun to pick apart and talk about the plot holes etc. It really is a fun movie to watch- just because it is so awful. If you actually want to watch a serious Captain America- there is always Captain America: The First Avenger. As I said before, this is not Captain America that I know and love; this is it's estranged Spanish brother who lives in a country ran by rats. A bit elaborate I know, but you get the message.
Captain America. This is not. With horrible directing, script, stunts, villain and some average acting, you will have a good time, as it is quite funny. Watch it at a party. A strange recommendation.
