Review of Capricorn One (1977) by Jonathan S — 30 Mar 2009
It's 1978, and NASA is going to launch the first men to Mars, but there's a hitch. A subcontractor installed a faulty life support system that would keep three men alive for no more than two weeks. Naturally, there are a few reasonable courses of action; you can delay the launch...OR...you can create a Mars sound stage, fake the Mars landing by blackmailing the three astronauts so they'll play along, THEN attempt to kill those same astronauts when they're not needed anymore. It's such a foolproof plan, what could go wrong?
One of many 70's films made in the paranoid style, "Capricorn One" is quite successful until it reaches the last 15 minutes or so, where it's crippled by some nonsense with Telly Savalas in a bi-plane, and another character's cheese ball slow-mo run to his own funeral.
James Brolin, Sam Waterston, and Orenthal James Simpson play the astronauts, and Elliott Gould is the reporter trying to uncover the conspiracy.
