Review of Cape Fear (1991) by Nick F — 17 Nov 2009
Can Scorsese and DeNiro ever do any wrong? I mean, I'm sure they could-if Shutter Island's ending is actually spoiled in the trailers and DeNiro makes a cameo, I would count that as "doing wrong"-but the point is that here they most certainly did not.
This movie does an amazing job of crating suspense, and I really enjoyed Scorsese directing a horror/suspense movie. While credit must be given to Scorsese, of course, it is DeNiro that truly makes this movie.
His character comes across as genuinely creepy, and truly frightening; Scorsese is able to make the audience feel like they are a member of the family that is being stalked by DeNiro's character, and while you're sure that he is the one doing all of these horrible, creepy things, you feel helpless because there's no way to prove it.
While this movie is not quite on the same level as Goodfellas or The Departed, it is a solid work, thus earning four stars.
