Review of Cape Fear (1991) by Raj G — 30 Apr 2010
As far as remakes go, Martin Scorsese's Cape Fear is one of the better ones, mostly thanks to Robert de Niro's chilling performance as Max Cady, an ex-convict hellbent on retribution against the defence lawyer (Nolte) who didn't serve his client to the best of his abilities and saw him sentenced to 14 years behind bars.
However, de Niro isn't the best performer in this, that achievement belongs to Juliette Lewis, who makes the most out of a very underwritten character. Martin Scorsese's direction is generally excellent, but the last 15 minutes are a huge let down, although this could be the fault of the screenwriter rather than the director.
On the whole, I think Cape Fear is a good movie, but lacks the power it had on it's original release, mostly due to the fact I can't take it seriously after watching The Simpson's episode which parodies it.
