Review of Calvaire (2005) by Mike S — 04 Mar 2008
Calvaire was definitely not what I expected. More demented and disturbing then your typical horror movie, without the over excessive use of blood and gore. The premise is an interesting one. A traveling performer's van breaks down in the middle of nowhere during a haevy storm.
Marc is forced to find the nearest home, which just happens to be a hotel. He thinks he'll be on his way the next day after the hotel owner repairs his car as promised. Unfortunately for Marc he reminds the inn keeper of his wife, who left him long ago.
You read it right, he reminded him of his wife. Marc tries to escape but is taken captive by this deranged man. The things he does to him are revolting, disturbing, and yet I wanted to laugh as well. Of course towards the end all hell breaks lose.
Kind of reminded me of a European Cabin Fever sans the blood. Calvaire is a decent enough movie, well directed, acted, and demented enough to hold just about interest. The ending will either turn you off completely, or make you appreciate the movie even more.
