Review of Calvaire (2005) by William J — 22 Mar 2008
Belgium might have a reputation as being utterly boring, but this is anything but. It's so refreshing to come across a horror film that actually has more to do with landmark films such as Deliverance and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre than with the current trend for crap (Saw et al).
The Ordeal is joyously deranged, with the odd bit of black humour thrown in for good measure. Fans of Gaspar Noe's Irreversible may recognise a few familiar faces, including Jo Prestia, who seems to have perfected the art of playing characters who do you-know-what do their victims. Also, keep an eye out for the awesome camerawork that comes right out of the blue courtesy of cinematographer Benoit Debie, who also contributed to Noe's film.
Not a classic by any means, but such a breath of fresh air for the genre.
