Review of Calvaire (2005) by Dennis V — 21 Aug 2008
Excellent Belgian effort for those who like their movies a bit different. Just when you think things couldn't possibly get any more screwed up than they already are, the director proves you wrong. Very Belgian as well in that things get surreal in places but never become artsy.
Comparing this to TTCM or Straw Dogs doesn't make sense because, just like those pictures, this movie should really be in a category of its own. Great performances from the leads, gorgeous scenes set in the Ardennes and a truly inspired script make this one not to miss.
