Review of Caligula (1979) by Warren A — 18 Sep 2008
It's not a great movie, but if you're going to watch it at all, you should watch the unedited version, which at the very least revells in its own excess as it brings to life the depravity of ancient Rome.
Almost every sexual peccadillo is explored here, and the combination of Tinto Brass's soft focus titilation, inserted hard-core sex scenes, paints a pretty graphic picture. Occasionally the sex takes a back seat, giving an all-star cast the chance to romp semi-naked through some impressive, stylised sets among seemingly hundreds of naked extras, and just in case anyone might be falling asleep, there are numerous jarring and explicit moments of violence and gore.
Malcolm McDowell looks like he's having an absolute ball througout!
