This is all about the banter. Neil Simon obviously had a sharp wit. It wasn't all comedy though, Jane Fondas' character was rather annoying and the story wasn't a bit funny. The Pryor/Cosby partnership was very good.
I imagine that "Four Rooms" was inspired by this film.
