Review of Byzantium (2013) by Jy S — 18 Dec 2013
Byzantium gets the slow vampire blood drain from Neil Jordan.Nearly pulling its way to 2 hours of screen time, the film manages to form a story with necessary revealed plot details. Taking place in the present, while taking it slow and steady, Byzantium finds opportune times to take a trip to the past to explain the more intriguing details of the story.
Not necessarily a blood fest, the picture still contains its share of lives to take. There also isn't much in the way of CG, which plays well into the film's atmosphere and style.Saoirse Ronan successfully blends into the script; however, the monotone persona of the character tends to suck out what little excitement the film has going for it.
Gemma Arterton is a gem on screen and is a delight to watch. As far as the male characters are portrayed, Sam Riley stands out. Thanks to a noteworthy cast, Byzantium manages to deliver a worthwhile vampire tale.
