Review of Butter (2012) by Brodie A — 10 Jan 2013
Butter is a movie about...butter sculpting. The movie follows two families during a city wide butter sculpting contest. The winner of the contest is moved towards the state contest. The entire movie is in the great state of Iowa. Everyone is very Conservative. First, we meet Bob Pickler. He was a butter sculptor for 15 years and was on a winning streak the entire time. The judges force him into retirement and basically tell him to give someone else a shot. This infuriates his trophy wife, Laura (Jennifer Garner), and she decides to compete in the contest since her husband can't. There is definitely drama in the Pickler house. Bob had been cheating his wife with a stripper, Brooke (Olivia Wilde). Laura finds out about Brooke and drama is ignited. Also, Laura and Bob have a daughter, Kaitlin (Ashley Greene. Alice from the Twilight series for any Twi-Hards out there).
At the same time we are introduced to a younger girl. Her name is Destiny and she's an 11 year old who is stuck in the foster system. She moves frequently and never had a permanent family. She finally is placed with two wonderful parents, Ethan and Jill (Alicia Silverstone). They ask what Destiny is interested in and she states she isn't interested in anything. Shortly after this statement she decides to enter the butter sculpting contest. Keep in mind they are in Iowa and Destiny is a young black girl. The commentary from Destiny is pretty funny. She comments on white people being crazy and other funny statements.
Oh, and Hugh Jackman is in it! Ha! He was Laura's high school sweetheart and now the owner of a successful car dealership. It was goofy seeing Jackman in this small and different role. Fans of Kristen Schaal will be happy too. She is a quirky character (as always) who makes an appearance at all of the butter gigs. Some of the stripper scenes were awkward and not very funny but they didn't last very long. 90% of the movie is about Laura competing with Destiny.
Butter was a slightly funny movie. It's already streaming on Netflix so I'm sure it wasn't a big hit in the theaters. It was released in the theaters October of last year so it didn't last too long. Despite it not being in theaters very long it is still worth a watch. It's a decent length, only an hour and a half. It isn't the best movie or the worst movie. I liked all of the actors in it. The young girl, Destiny, was very inspirational and it was a semi-heart warming movie.
