Review of Butter (2012) by Adam R — 22 Jul 2014
A quirky comedy with a good scrip helped along by an excellent cast. Jennifer Garner shines as the obsessive Laura, whilst Hugh Jackman make a brief but memorable cameo as a sleazy car salesman.
It's a combination of sex comedy and sweet sentimental drama; due to the bringing together the stories of a dysfunctional family and a young foster child who bounces from home to home. Thankfully, the gushy sentimentality is done largely for laughs.
Using a butter carving competition as the central narrative is inventive and amusing; but needs to be taken with a large pinch of salt.
"Butter" is not a rip roaring, laugh a minute comedy but, if you enjoyed "Little Miss Sunshine" or "Juno", this should be your type of film.
