Review of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) by Jameson W — 04 Jul 2012
Both my wife and I were really shocked at how dated and slack this supposed classic was. I suppose that the comic concept here is that the guys personalities don't live up to the legend, but every moment in Newman's and Redford's performance, I felt that they were either actors playing accountants or actors playing actors playing bank robbers. They were so removed from their roles I wondered if they just saw the screenplay the night before and did the whole thing in one take. Had I not seen Newman in far better roles, I'd have dismissed him as an actor on par with Madonna and William Shatner.
The legendary William Goldman script is so slack. The movie ambles for 40 minutes with no point for its characters until finally Butch and Sundance are on the run from the UP posse.
I never saw this at the time, although I did see their follow-up "The Sting" and totally enjoyed it then. Would I have felt differently at the time?
