Review of Burnt Offerings (1976) by Matti J — 18 Apr 2008
Burnt Offerings is not nearly as bad as most people make it out to be. It is a rather beautifully-shot chiller revolving around an old mansion out in the country which feeds off of its inhabitants. In other words, when the centuries-old home begins to lose its energy and its beauty, its ghostly inhabitants welcome an unknowing couple in for the duration of the summer and, in turn, proceed to feed off of their presence.
Haunting, miniscule music; mastery camera angles, primarily shot low-facing-up; gorgeous cinematography; and accomplished, if slightly over-the-top, performances. I highly recommend you watch this alone in a big, dark house; you may reconsider your votes for any of today's so-called "scary movies" as being some of the "scariest movies you've ever seen".
