Review of Burn! (1969) by Guy G — 24 May 2011
One brutal but good looking british spy played by Marlon Brando arrives at this portugese colonial island in the carrabean in the early 1800's.
He has got plan to help out a slave rebellion against the europeans only to find out that it's already been crushed before his arrival - so he has to invent a new one.
Brandos role man Walker is a man with litlle morale, changing loyalties as it suites him, with no reflections over the outcome or the consequences.
When he finally grows some conscience, it's too late and a lot of people are dead and the whole Island is burned down, kind of.
The movie is not that far away from the classic Herzog/Kinski epic "cobra Verde" but Marlon is of course not that mad that Klaus Kinski is.
There were some movie around 1969-70 that was filmed in the third world and had some kind of a documentary feel eventhough it was drama, and this is one of them. It's not fantastic, but not bad. Brando plays out grande and complex.
