Review of Burn! (1969) by Jeremy K — 26 Jul 2013
It's worth searching out this overlooked masterpiece just for the hypnotic opening score by Ennio Morricone. But stay with it and you will be mesmerised also by Brando's performance as Sir William Walker, a kind of 19th Century James Bond - morally dissolute, politically ruthless yet personally complex in equal measures.
This powerful film asks what really lies behind the rhetoric of capitalist freedom and free trade? Made against the background of the Vietnam war, Queimada is strangely resonant for these times also - perhaps for all times.
Different era, different empire, same agenda? Once seen, never forgotten.
