Review of Buffalo '66 (1998) by Eric S — 11 Jul 2011
Vincent Gallo creates two wonderful characters in this film (Billy and Layla), who share some really wonderful scenes together. I really loved them by the end. The film looks and feels very rough, but it feels just right and the experimental sequences are playful and innocent as oppose to jarring and confusing.
Gallo's use of long takes shot with a stationary camera, whether dictated by the films budget or not, is surprisingly effective and refreshing. Christina Ricci is beautifully photographed and the scene where she tapdances in the bowling alley is one of the best things in the movie.
This film seems to have a heart and a real reason for existing.
