Review of Bubba Ho-tep (2002) by James O — 02 Jul 2011
This is most definitely Bruce Campbell's best film since Army of Darkness. The movie it self is as "B" as it gets: Elvis Presley and a man who thinks he's JFK face off against an ancient mummy dressed like a cowboy.
That description alone should warn you what kind of movie you're getting into. But for me, and most people, Bubba Ho-Tep is a spectacular film. It's directed by Don Coscarelli (The Phantasm series; Beastmaster) and stars Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead trilogy; Burn Notice), Ossie Davis, and Reggie Bannister (The Phantasm series; Wishmaster).
It really doesn't get any better than that. It's really funny, especially Campbell's performance as Elvis. At one point, where those two guys were putting the body into the hearse, I really wanted Angus Scrimm to stick his head out of the driver's seat and say, "Hurry up! Or do I have to drill it into your heads?" That's copyrighted material.
Don't steal my ideas. The make-up on Bubba Ho-Tep is phenomenal, and it really looks like a natural mummy. Great stuff.
