Review of Bubba Ho-tep (2002) by Tim S — 23 Nov 2016
You've got to hand it to Don Coscarelli. The man certainly knows how to come up with something that's different. Bubba Ho-Tep is about as far out of left field as you can imagine, but it somehow manages to achieve greatness in spite of itself.
The plot itself is pretty cooky: in a rest home in Texas, an old Elvis Presley and a black man who thinks he's JFK team up against a thousand year old mummy who's come there to steal the souls of the rest home's inhabitants.
Pretty weird, huh? Well, Coscarelli knows that a movie can't just live off of its cooky concept alone. There's plenty of characterization to go around and you actually care about these characters, in an odd way.
You also feel a little choked up at the end, which is very weird at that point. Overall, it's a fun and campy little movie that genre fans should be eating up.
