Review of Brother Bear (2003) by Audrey L — 05 Sep 2009
Brother Bear.
At the beginning of the movie I didn't think I would enjoy it very much. Then toward the middle I started to enjoy it. Keyni's brother Sitka was killed in the process of trying to kill a bear and also trying to save his brothers. After his death Keyni went after the bear and killed her. Then Sitka came down to earth as a spirit and turned Keyni into a bear for not showing the love he was suppose to from his totem. After Keyni turned into a bear he met a little cub named Koda. Koda was an annoyance to Keyni in the beginning because he wasn't use to being a bear and was anxious to find were the light met the earth so he could be turned into human again. Then Koda told him that he wanted Keyni to go to the salmon run with him and he told him he at the salmon run the light meets the earth. Then Keyni was all about going with Koda. During their adventure to the salmon run the faced many obstacles. They had to run from hunters, they got lost and they had to go through a field of lava. During all these obstacles Keyni and Koda started to get along and became friends. When Koda and Keyni reached the salmon run their were already tons of bears and Keyni was frightened because he wasn't use to being around them as a bear. At the Salmon run the had story time and koda spoke up and was telling a story about how his mom was getting chased by hunters. As koda was telling his story Keyni realized that Kodas mother is the bear that he had killed. Keyni felt so guilty and ended up telling Koda which cause him to become heart broken and run away. Toward the end Keynis other brother Danchi was trying to kill him but Koda came to the rescue and saved his life. Keyni finally reached the light were it met the earth and Sitka turned hi back into human. Koda was disappointed and Keyni realized that Koda needed him and told sitka to turn him back into a bear. After being turned back into a bear Keyni and Koda lived with Keynis family. Keyni received his totem back and by fulfilling his duties he got to put his hand on the wall like his ancestors. This movie touched my heart. It was amazing how a human would want to become a bear to help a friend.
Brother Bear had many things that related to world religion. In the very beginning of the movie it showed the tribes writing/ carving different pictures on the wall. The tribe had a spirit it believed in and the spirit would hand out totems to those that had certain meanings. Keyni got a totem that meant love and he had to follow through with it or face consequences. After following through they got to place their hand print on a wall with the rest of the ancestors that had also followed through with the totem. Also, when some one passed they held a ceremony that had a bonfire. They would send the soul of the dead to the spirits to help with watching over their tribe. The tribes celebrated with special dances and music. Theses are many things the movie Brother Bear had in it to relate to world religion.
