Review of Brother (1997) by John H — 28 Mar 2008
If you want to understand the situation of Russia in the mid-90s, see this movie. At its core, it is a fast-paced, stripped-down crime movie. But here as well are comments on the economic and social situation of the times, club-hopping American yuppie tourists, the racism of Russian society (actually one of the more troubling aspects of the film), and the macho culture of violence.
I personally appreciated the St. Petersburg setting and the hilarious yet bittersweet subplot about the main character's love of the band Nautilus Pompilius.
