Review of Brother (1997) by Ben O — 31 Aug 2008
A rough crime drama from post-Soviet Russia. Definitely not the St Petersburg I know, it digs into the underbelly of a poor society trying to find its feet.
Bleak and grim, with a very black sense of humour. The late Sergei Bodrov Jr is fantastic in the lead with a strong support cast around him.
You see... there is Russian cinema outside Eisenstein and Tarkovsky.
One more thing... if it had been made in any other country, the Americans would have remade it as a dumb, violent actioner.
