Review of Brother (1997) by Mattias E — 22 Aug 2008
Post-Soviet St Petersburg looks almost post-apocalyptic in this gritty crimeflick. Both photography and sets brings Stalker to mind but the action and plot don't. The violence is heavily toned downed, but you get the point.
Balabanovs movie is a loud comment on capitalist Russia and a bleak one at that. I found Danila to be pretty naive and indolent, but I can see why nationalists are picking up on this character. Brat certainly brought forth something new to Russian cinema.
