Review of Bronson (2009) by Liam P — 21 Sep 2011
SUMMING IT UP:
Stylistically and emotionally confronting, Refn brings an undeniable energy to the telling of this story. He's supported by Hardy in a completely committed and brave performance. Hardy is great at subtlety so it's off-putting to see him so overt in all of his actions here but it suits the role and the film as a whole and once the viewer is in swing with the rhythm of the piece the film pummels along. It's a significantly different voice on show here and probably a retrospective hint at why Drive picked him up the director award at 2011's Cannes Festival. Not for everyone but worth a look.
