Review of Broken Flowers (2005) by Jerry S — 21 Oct 2010
Murray gives another of his fine late career dramatic performances as an aging womanizer belatedly confronting the emptiness of the life he's lived, and he's ably supported by Jeffrey Wright (as his irrepressible amateur sleuth neighbor) and Sharon Stone, Frances Conroy, Jessica Lange, and Tilda Swinton (as four of his former lovers), along with a script that never lets its interludes of droll, understated comedy undermine its dramatic pathos.
Jarmusch is an observational, slice-of-life filmmaker, so anyone going in expecting a movie that moves briskly and neatly wraps everything up in a little bow will be disappointed. But for viewers with the patience to follow him down the road of this character's life, "Broken Flowers" offers a satisfying and at times very affecting viewing experience.
