Review of Broken Flowers (2005) by Katherine P — 07 Jun 2012
A humorous and disciplined effort from Jarmusch, Broken Flowers delivers some of his, and Murray's, best work. In this minimalist melodrama, a man depleted of his lust for life sets out to find the son he didn't know he had by revisiting some of his old flames.
At first, he is an unlikable character but Murray plays deadpan Don Johnson perfectly and eventually we sympathize with this exhausted former Don Juan. The vignettes are detailed and they illuminate the audience to a past that Don has completely forgotten.
A witty and gentle film that's easy to misunderstand but (hopefully) likeable for most adults.
