Review of Broken Blossoms or The Yellow Man and the Girl (1919) by Stephen K — 15 Jun 2008
The domestic abuse on screen is horrifying and unflinching. Lillian Gish is a revelation, and her ability to convey panic and terror is unrivaled.
Featuring detailed and wonderful sets, the contrast between the Chinese apartment with all of it's beautiful furniture and design and the bleak brick wall dungeon of Lucy's home is mesmerizing.
The pantomime that the Chinese missionary performs has such natural and eloquent grace. One actually sees the rays of light being sprinkled all over our smile-free heroine and the heart swells with emotion.
