Richard Attenborough is excellent in this gritty British thriller, which is among the most accessible, tense and thematically engaging of the classic film noirs. Among its contemporaries, it has aged fairly well, and Attenborough's turn as conflicted mobster Pinkie smoothes over the rough patches.
