Review of Bright (2017) by Entee T — 04 Apr 2018
I came to this movie expecting a Will Smith cop drama set in an alternate fantasy world, and that's what I got.
I just don't get the almost universal disdain from critics towards this movie?
Is it Hollywood elitism afraid of the new guy (streaming)? Did they expect Will Smith to have more range than he does? Who knows?
What I know is I really enjoyed this movie and what I expected and more out of it: Drama, check; Faeries Elves and Orcs, check; Will Smith, check. I didn't expect how well using orcs to look at our humanity and how we treat those that are "other" would work.
Will Smith is Will Smith, no surprise there. Joel Edgerton is really brilliant in the role of the Orc partner, a role not to be missed. Also Margaret Cho is great in this, I didn't even recognize it was her the first time I watched this.
Is this the best movie ever of this type? No. Is it really enjoyable? YES!
If you haven't seen this yet do yourself a favor and watch it, I doubt you will be disappointed.
I enjoyed it so much I watched it again a week later and will likely watch again sometime soon.
