Review of Brief Encounter (1945) by Ellen B — 13 Sep 2007
A touching tale of love that must be forever unrealised, this film gets to the heart of the true pain, passion, isolation and sacrifice behind the British stiff upper lip. It is a masterclass in low key, engaging acting, gently asking you to experience the story along with the characters, rather than having the emotional turmoil casually rammed down your throat at every opportunity. Beautiful without ever being sentimental, and with an honest recognition that life goes on, this film is, quite simply, wonderful.
On a final note, what insane person thought that 'Titanic' was the film, in all of cinematic history, that most closely resembled this one?
