Review of Brief Encounter (1945) by Simon H — 18 Jun 2014
Brief Encounter is an odd little film. The story is simple and consists of a married woman who becomes close with a stranger she met. The plot doesn't require much to follow and flows quite easily. The two leads play the characters well and have good chemistry together. Due to its release being back in the 40's, much of the dialogue and actions would be considered very old fashioned compared to today. Whilst not intentional, you can't help but chuckle every now and then.
There are also some interesting film making techniques implemented. Some scenes contain close-ups of characters mouths or eyes to really give the emotions across to the audience. It was also a good idea to have the lead female narrating throughout the story, which gave her emotions in scenes with no other characters.
The story is engaging and keeps you entertained but I feel it does not work too well as much as it would have back then. By the end, I was unsure if I was supposed to feel sorry for the characters or not, especially when it showed how pleasant the father was whom she planned to cheat on.
