Review of Brief Encounter (1945) by Andy G — 14 May 2008
Brief Encounter is a classic woman's point-of-view story of infidelity. The script was quite stagey (makes sense considering this was adapted from a play), and it took a while for me to interpret all the British quips. But overall I did sympathize with the main character and the concept of forbidden true love in a very set-in-stone society. And as the first David Lean movie I've seen all the way through, I can see why he is held in such regard. Light dims on and off ever so subtly around Laura as her voiceover plays, making it seem like time has stopped for her to contemplate her emotions. That's just one of the many quirks that make this a B&W hallmark of not just Lean's work but the entire British film canon.
"You know what's happening, don't you?".
