Review of Brief Encounter (1945) by Ian Y — 09 Jan 2009
Simply wonderful. it caught me so firmly that I was debating the moral question with myself for days. the dialogue may be dated, but it's still beautiful; the cinematograhy is stunning; celia johnson has the most expressive eyes ever seen on film; and I love the way you can read trevor howard's performance two ways (personally, I don't trust him).
amazing that the horse whisperer and the bridges of madison county work on the same basic premise, yet they're the dullest films i've ever been forced to endure, while brief encounter is a masterpiece.
proof that they don't make 'em like they used to.
