Review of Brick Lane (2007) by David G — 24 Nov 2007
The book wasn't a chick lit, so how this became a chick flick, god knows.. Strip away the multi sub-plots and the crux is about how tradition subjects and repeats actions through generations. Faced with the tough choice of subjecting her own daughters to what she was subjected to, it is a tale of redemption, if you see the westernised view of emancipation as redemption that is.
Much much more could have been made about her relationship with her daughters, a lost opportunity to make a strong commentary on the complicated weave religion & tradition has on female disempowerement.
Granted, some beautiful framing, use of colours and bokeh in the cinematography. Chatterjee puts in a restrained and heartfelt performance, but more importantly Christopher Simpson is one helluva fit hottie I'd shag :D.
