Review of Brick Lane (2007) by Diane L — 16 Oct 2009
Wasn't so impressed by the trailer, but the film is beautiful, feminine and haunting. About what it is to be a woman, what it is to be a mother. Tender and intense shot from Nazneed's perspective as she views the world around her. As I sorted the laundry before bed after the film, I was haunted even by her hands handling fabric, and her songs. A beautiful, evocative film.
PS I cannot bear slow films. I found this to be a cram-packed film with nuances, experiences through Nazneed's eyes, interplays between characters, completely engrossing and unbearable when a male friend wanted to tell me he was going to the shop as it was 'quite slow' as I was missing bits as he said it. 'Yes, yes, fine, shh!' A film for the senses...and the soul.
And beautiful music of course...on reflection.
