Review of Brick Lane (2007) by Daniel S — 13 Apr 2008
I was quite disappointed with Brick lane because I was expecting Nazneen to break with the past gender pressures and expectations. She actually resigns and accepts what she considers to be her destiny. Besides that, love and attraction are painted as black and white, and morality is never an issue in the protagonist's life, when in reality things can be quite different....
There are some other issues related to Islam that are not well developed and explored, leaving the audience to be reduce to unexplored issues....
Anyway, it has beautiful photography; amazing colors; a very romantic sense of the past in diaspora. Moreover, the soundtrack is perfect; it helps to recreate a magic environment and to enact the past outside the homeland.
