Review of Brick Lane (2007) by Leon B — 21 Dec 2008
The film deals with what seems at first to be too many tensions (between family, country, culture, gender, class, generation, religion) but a central inquiry weaves these threads together: "What is home?" The epistolary-style of storytelling creates intimacy, and the artistic though deliberate play with light and mirrors makes this as much a sensual exploration as a sociopolitical one.
Overall, I enjoyed it, especially as a window into individual immigrant experience.
