Review of Brick (2006) by Rob G — 04 Aug 2010
A nightmarish, one-dimensional fast-talking noir that just so happens to be set at public high. At first I approached this with the same suspicion I have about people who dress children as adults. Would a cast of vapid chain-smoking teens pull off the intensity and grunginess required? The answer is f**k yes.
In the entire film, only one adult is seen, the screen populated entirely by whorish thespians, angry junkies, and library nerds with the connections of a mafia boss.
As the lead, Joseph Gordon-Levitt could not have been better. He smolders and weeps and yells and plays it cool at all the right times. He stares down a charging vintage mustang with all the calm of Steve McQueen, and as he gets deeper, the beatings get worse for him and those around him.
"I've got all five senses and I slept last night," he threatens a crowd of gawking druggies after beating up their leader," that puts me six up on the lot of you.".
Simple, violent, alternately slow and hard to keep up with, Brick will surprise on all levels. It's a triumph of a simple budget and great casting.
