Review of Brick (2006) by Jackson B — 31 May 2011
Its a daring and on the surface gimmicky move. Take a classic film noir plotline and transfer it to a California high school, with teens doing the tough talking, the school's drug scene as the criminal underworld, and a would be high school social climber as the femme fatale.
If the plotline is too self referential and tongue in cheek it runs the risk of appearing cutesy. Too straight and it may come off as completely ridiculous. Brick manages to strike the perfect tone, a completely straight storyline but with the occasional characters so over the top one can't help but smile.
The films works so well in large part to the talents of its young actors, Levitt is pitch perfect as the bruised, too smart for his own good hero. The supporting cast shines as well. Brick is a testament to what a smart script, good acting, and a tiny budget can accomplish.
